South Street

Los Angeles has Rodeo Drive. New York City has Fifth Ave. In New Orleans, there’s Bourbon Street. No matter the city, each seems to have that one defining length of road that, in a sense, is symbolic of its personality. In Philadelphia, it’s the iconic South Street. Though each neighborhood in the City of Brotherly Love has its own personality and claim to fame, this is arguably the most sought-after by tourists and the most well-known. So you know that, when looking for apartments near South Street, you’re going to be in the thick of things.

Here are some of our favorite spots you shouldn’t miss.

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens

Throughout the city—and in particular on South Street—you’ll likely notice a series of tile mosaics. Sometimes they’re down a random alleyway, along a storefront wall, or even embedded into the sidewalk. These are the works of artist Isaiah Zagar, and the biggest display of his work is at a half-block outdoor sculpture garden on South between 10th and 11th.

Jim’s Steaks South Street

The oldest cheesesteak restaurant on South Street, there’s almost always a line out the door at this 40-plus-year-old joint…and there’s no question why. The no-frills sandwich that has become synonymous with the Philly food scene is done the right way here: Tender, shaved slices of beef topped with grilled onions, peppers, and (if you order it properly) gooey Cheez Whiz is served up, piping hot, on a chewy hoagie roll—the way it was intended.

Moo Tattoo

There’s a decidedly hipster vibe throughout the city, but particularly in this area. So if you’re in the market for some permanent body art, this is the place you’ll want to visit. Though the talented artists on staff can make your wildest tattoo dreams a reality, they specialize in the watercolor variations—the ink is still permanent, but it has the look and feel of everyone’s favorite childhood paints.

Bistro Romano Mystery Theater

Who doesn’t love a little mystery theater in their life, especially when it comes with a four-course dinner? The interactive show—yes, that means you’ll be participating in one way or another—brings to life a true crime–style murder mystery that will leave you asking, “Whodunnit?” right until the very end.

Of course, this barely begins to dive into all there is to do on this happening street. With more than 400 independent businesses, setting up shop in an apartment near South Street will guarantee that you never have to wander too far for some entertainment or a good meal.
